The importance of lanyard card holders

lanyard accessories

Lanyards are helping to make workplaces, schools, and public buildings safer with card holders that can be used to display a person's ID. In this blog, we explore the importance of lanyard card holders, and look at where they might be used and what your options are when it comes to customising them.

What are lanyard attachments?

A lanyard is a thin piece of fabric that is worn around the neck in a loop. The material (usually polyester) can be colour-matched and printed with a logo or message that reflects your company's visual identity.

They also come with safety breaks fitted, but we can supply them without if you prefer. Safety breaks are designed to snap to prevent choking if the lanyard is ever pulled or gets caught on something.

Custom lanyards are great for raising brand awareness, which makes them popular with marketers, but their functionality goes beyond just advertising. You can also choose from a range of useful clips and attachments that give your lanyard another purpose.

All our lanyards come with a metal trigger clip as standard, but you can choose from others, such as a split ring, a carabiner, a lobster claw, a Japan hook, or a crocodile clip.

From fun to functional, there are a whole range of lanyard attachments, but our most popular is the lanyard card holder. This rigid plastic attachment can hold an ID card the size of a credit card, which can be worn around the neck for full visibility.

Why use a lanyard card holder?

Lanyard card holders are incredibly practical – they offer employees and students a way of carrying their ID so it's visible all the time without them having to delve into their bag or pocket to bring it out whenever they're asked.

It gives security teams (and other employees) the ability to identify people at a quick glance and reassure themselves that the wearer is entitled to be there. Whether it's a workplace, a school, or an entertainment venue, this level of security is needed to keep everyone safe.

As well as being incredibly useful for security, lanyard card holders also provide reassurance to the people using a service. In a hospital or care home, for example, it's comforting to know the first name of the person looking after you or your loved one.

Being able to call someone by their name adds a much-needed human touch!

Where an employee's ID doubles as their key card, having it on a lanyard gives them easy access to it whenever they need it. And they're guaranteed not to forget it when they move between different areas of a building.

Where are lanyard card holders used?

Lanyard card holders are used in places where security is important, and a person's identity needs to be visible all the time. We've picked out these places as examples, but there are many more:

  • schools, colleges, and universities
  • primary health care settings (a doctors surgery or hospital)
  • care homes/other similar settings
  • government offices and council buildings
  • other large employment offices
  • airports
  • emergency services e.g. a police building, fire station etc.

Schools and other educational settings are good examples of places where only people who have passed certain security checks should be on site, which is why lanyard card holders are so popular in this sector.

At Only Lanyards, we are proud to work with several of Britain's educational institutions, including the University of Cambridge and Northumbria University Newcastle, where students and staff are spread across campuses in different parts of the city.

What are your printing options?

Our lanyard card holders are available in either landscape or portrait, and you can choose to have one side open – or both.

We also offer a fully enclosed lanyard holder for those occasions where you need a lanyard card holder to carry a membership card, key card or ID card but it doesn't need to be visible.
Your options at a glance – lanyard card holders

  • open on one side,
  • open both sides,
  • or fully enclosed

You can take advantage of the space on one side of your card holder by having it printed with your logo or another design. Using your Pantone or RGB colour references, we can print your logo to match your brand's visual identity exactly.

Just like the lanyard material itself – which can also be printed – this is an ideal opportunity to use a space that would otherwise be left blank.

Personalised lanyards make great promotional tools because they are seen by multiple people wherever the wearer goes. The more useful your lanyard is, the more likely it is to be worn again, giving your brand more exposure.

The alternative to a lanyard card holder

As well as lanyard card holders, we also supply clear PVC pouches that fit folded paper and cards. These attachments are ideal for holding temporary identification, like the kind you might print to give to a visitor.

They can be used with most lanyard clips, and they also work with double-ended designer lanyards.

PVC pouches are popular at conferences, trade shows, and networking events for displaying attendees' business cards, and they can be used for holding VIP passes and tickets at events, like music festivals.

The soft, flexible pouches come in a range of sizes from credit card sized (92 x 57mm landscape) up to A6 (152 x 135mm landscape or portrait), and they can be custom-made in a size to suit you.

When it comes to choosing the right custom lanyard attachment, we don't expect you to be an expert – that's where we come in. At Only Lanyards, we have years of experience in helping customers to choose the right solution for their company, brand, or event.
