Complete guide to lanyards for keys

You might have seen people wearing their keys on a lanyard and wondered whether you or your team would benefit from doing the same. In this guide, we look at some of the advantages to using a lanyard for keys and consider what makes a good lanyard.

What are personalised lanyards?

A lanyard is a loop of fabric worn round the neck with a clip at the bottom to hold some kind of accessory, such as a lanyard card holder or a clear PVC wallet.

Personalised lanyards are usually printed with a company logo or some other design, but they can also be bought off-the-shelf in a range of plain colours.

Two main types of printed lanyard

  • Screen-printed lanyards are printed in two colours on a flat weave polyester, which makes them both durable and cost-effective.
  • Dye sublimated lanyards are printed in full colour on a smooth polyester that has a silkier feel. This type of high-resolution print is ideal for reproducing complex designs, and the lanyard can be printed on both sides

Far from being confined to polyester, there are a multitude of other materials available, and just as many options when it comes to clips and attachments.

Introducing lanyards for keys

Lanyards for keys are no different to many other types of lanyards. The fabric we use is strong enough to carry keys and you'll have the same range of clips to choose from.

  • Metal trigger clip (standard)
  • Crocodile clip
  • Dog clip
  • Plastic trigger clip
  • Carabiner clip
  • Split ring
  • Swivel J hook
  • Lobster claw
  • Flat metal hook
  • Japan hook

For carrying keys, we recommend using a heavy-duty clip, such as a carabiner or a lobster claw clip, and our team can advise you on this when you place your order.

You might also want to consider ordering your lanyards with a quick release clip. This type of attachment is strong enough to hold your keys, and can be detached from the lanyard when you need to use them (also ideal for door passes and access cards).

We include safety breaks as standard on all our lanyards, and this is particularly important if you're carrying keys. If they should get caught on something, the safety break will snap and the lanyard will come apart, protecting the wearer from injury.

If you don't want to include a safety break, simply let your account manager know.

Why do people use lanyards for keys?

Using a lanyard to carry your keys is a great way of keeping them close-by without having to carry a bag around with you. Just some of its other benefits include:

  1. Security/safety

There is less chance of your keys being stolen if they're around your neck rather than in your pocket or your bag. This is particularly important if you work in a secure environment with areas that are closed to unauthorised personnel.

  1. Convenience

Having your keys with you is incredibly useful if you need to use them frequently. It also means that you're less likely to lose them because they're always on you.

  1. Functionality

If you choose to carry your keys on a lanyard, rather than in your hand or in a bag, you can remain hands-free. This is ideal for custodians, caretakers and cleaning staff who would benefit from being able to use their hands as they move between spaces.

What if you have an access pass?

If you have a door pass (access card) instead of a set of keys, and you want to use a lanyard, we can help. Our rigid plastic ID card holders are credit-card sized and ideal for door passes – all you need is a standard metal trigger clip to attach your card holder.

When it comes to picking the right lanyard card holder, we have the following options:

  • open-faced (on one or both sides) - landscape
  • open-faced (on one or both sides) - portrait
  • enclosed card holder - landscape or portrait

You can also choose to have it printed on one side with your own logo or design.

For extra convenience, why not consider adding in a retractable badge reel? The reel is sewn into the fabric of the lanyard and acts as an extension, so you can pull your card out towards the point of access and the cord retracts again when you've finished.

Not only does this make unlocking access points quick and easy, but it also stops you from losing your door pass because you never need to remove it from its holder.

How do you order lanyards?

If you think you or your team might benefit from wearing their keys on a lanyard, then we can help you pick the right products.

We don't expect you to be an expert on the different printing methods, clips, and attachments available, which is why we have a team of industry professionals ready and waiting to handle your enquiry.

Our sales team will talk you through the following elements of your order:

  • the material you'd like to use
  • the width of your lanyard (between 10mm and 25mm)
  • the design you'd like printed on your lanyard
  • how many and where you'd like your safety breaks
  • your clips and attachments

When it comes to the design, you have two options – you can either send your own complete artwork, or we can design your lanyard for you. Lanyards are very narrow and getting the design right can be tricky, which is why we offer to do the hard work for you.

If you opt for us to do the design, we'll ask for your logo and any specific colour references you have (we accept RGB and Pantone references). Before it's printed, you'll receive a visual proof of your lanyard so you can sign off the design.

From start to finish, we aim to make ordering your lanyards as easy as possible.
