Lanyard Frequently Asked Questions: Part One

Lanyard FAQs

What is a Lanyard Necklace?

A lanyard necklace is a piece of string, circular cord or lace that is worn around the neck. It usually features clips, rings, or hooks that hold items like ID cards, badges, keys, or a wide range of other things.

Why are Lanyards Called Lanyards?

The word originated from the word ‘frankish nasle’ which transformed into ‘naslier’ followed by ‘lasniere’, and finally ‘laniere’. In its early days, it meant ‘band’ or ‘strap’ which is not dissimilar to what it is used for today. It is referred to under several other synonyms such as twine, line, or string.

Where did Lanyards Originate From?

Their first mention is believed to be in 15th century France. They were used to attach weapons such as guns and swords, but could also attach whistles for signalisation. Initially referred to as sailor or cavalry lanyard cords, they were later used by adventurers and cowboys who would use them to hold pistols. Early on, styles were minimal and very basic. This is because lanyard appearance wasn’t seen as particularly important, as lanyards only had a functional purpose. Centuries later, and fashion lanyards began to emerge. This was a far cry from the original lanyards that were pieces of rope. Today, they are glossy and modern and used for a multitude of reasons besides simply holding guns, knives, or weapons by sailors and the military. Today, lanyards can be decorated and intricately braided, something which stemmed from Napoleon Bonaparte who particularly liked complex and coloured styles. Lanyards used to be awarded in the military as prizes, something which certain American and Canadian army circles still practice today. While some people merely consider a lanyard as a cord for something like identification, others appreciate their exciting history and enjoy customising theirs to make it unique.

What Style of Lanyards are Available?

Lanyards are popular these days for advertising. As well as being useful for employees, they can be handed out to volunteers and guests at events so that everyone can be identified appropriately and to make the organisation look professional. While there are loads of different styles to choose from, it’s best to choose something that best reflects your business and brand. Lanyards can be manufactured in various fabrics, cuts, sizes, colours, and printing techniques. This helps to create something that even the fussiest person would be willing to wear around their neck. Before considering design, it’s essential to consider what the lanyard will be used for. Are they for your staff so that they can display their ID badges? Or will they be used for an event? Perhaps you intend to use them inside a gift bag as a takeaway for an event?

What are Lanyards Used for?

While contemporary lanyards are very functional, they are also stylish and can impress visitors and clients. In fact, some lanyards are so beautiful; we’d consider them a work of art! Lanyards can be made as unique as your company is. Commonly, lanyards are used to display ID badges and confirm staff identities. Designer lanyards could also be used for exclusive events as they can be customised with beads and jewellery. They’re practical for sports coaches as they can be used to hold whistles. At the same time, for children, they’re perfect for keeping hold of water bottles during bike rides or other practical activities. Lanyards even exist that hold keys!

What are Knife Lanyards Used for?

The use of knives attached to lanyards is something of a controversial topic. Nevertheless, there are benefits. They are particularly useful for hiking and camping, as they provide quick access to this essential item. As the lanyard remains tied to the user’s wrist, there’s less chance of them losing it. Brightly coloured lanyards manufactured from neon fabric enable the user to see this essential item- even in the dark. However, the lanyard must be up to the job, which is why many users prefer the Chris Reeves style lanyards.

Why are Lanyards for Ignition Safety Switches Important?

In places like gyms, and even on motorboats, accidents are all too common. In a gym, a lanyard can act as a safety device, cutting out the operation of a piece of equipment if a problem was to occur. For example, if someone fell off a treadmill. Similarly, operators of motorboats might be provided with a lanyard safety switch, allowing them to turn the engine off in an emergency.

What is an Elite Lanyard Style Wrist Sling Used for?

Initially, they were provided for archery fans because they can be adjusted to suit individual arrow release styles. They’re also used in schools, colleges and sports teams to instil a sense of belonging and team spirit. They are suited to such purposes as they are stronger than lanyards used in places like conferences and trade shows.

How are Lanyards Made?

Four manufacturing techniques exist. Dye sublimation, screen printing, weaving and tubular lanyards. Dye sublimation is quite a new technique that is becoming more and more popular. It involves placing straps into an industrial machine that produces the sublimation process. This is where a solid substance is turned into gas when heat is added to it. Screen printing uses meshes, where dye’s of different colours are applied to lanyards. Weaving is a more time-intensive process that involves stitching a logo or slogan into the lanyard itself. Tubular lanyards are very comfortable for the wearer as they contain no sharp edges and are similar to shoelaces.

What is the Best Fabric for Lanyards?

There are many different types of fabrics available for lanyards. For upmarket and sophisticated events, satin is a great choice. In contrast, for factories, general businesses or schools, polyester, cotton or nylon are most suited. Lanyards made from beads are best suited for holding glasses, while lanyards made from braided leather twine can be used to stand out. For active users, lanyard style earphones are available as well.

What are the Most Common Clip Styles for Lanyards?

Breakaway clips are essential for hospitals, schools and nurseries as they help avoid injury. If the lanyard becomes caught in something, it opens automatically, preventing any harm. Other types of lanyard clip are vital as they allow things to be attached to it. Rings and hooks are most common, but carabiners, clips and buckles can also be purchased.
